The mystery and application of defoamers for water-based coatings
Release time:2024-09-03 Page-views:32

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, water-based coatings have gradually become the mainstream of the coating market due to their low VOC (volatile organic compound) emission characteristics. However, waterborne coatings often face foam problems in the production and application process, which not only affects the construction efficiency, but also may have a negative impact on the film quality. Therefore, choosing the appropriate water-based coating defoamer is particularly important. Foam is easily produced in the process of surfactant, water evaporation and mixing in water-based coatings. If the foam is not eliminated in time, it will lead to surface defects, sagging and uneven drying of the coating.

Mineral oil defoamer, based on the principle of low surface tension, spreads rapidly on the surface of foam and destroys its stability. Organic silicone defoamers have excellent high temperature and acid alkali resistance, and can continuously exert defoaming effects under harsh conditions. Polymer defoamers inhibit the formation of foam through intermolecular force, and have good compatibility with the paint system, and are not easy to produce side effects.

Choose defoamers that match the water-based coating system to avoid affecting the coating performance. Control the amount of addition, too much may lead to an increase in coating viscosity, while too little may result in poor defoaming effect. Pay attention to the timing of adding defoamers, usually during the pre painting or construction stage.

With the advancement of technology, defoamers for water-based coatings will become more efficient and environmentally friendly, promoting the green and sustainable development of the water-based coating industry.
